How many of times have you accrued vacation hours or days but had to used them for everything but that? “I’m sick so I’ll just use some of my paid time off (PTO) to cover my lost time”, we think. Some [people] don’t have the luxury of thinking these thoughts because they feel that they can’t miss any time from work out of fear of being perceived as a slacker or selfish; they choose to take minimal time off even when they have it to use.
Yes, it is sometimes difficult for our employers to find coverage in our absence but paid time off is earned for a reason. Strong, concerned employers will make the effort to ensure that staff know and understand the importance of using their time. More importantly, they will also educate their staff on the many uses for this time including sick leave, personal days, and vacation. Last year, over 705 million vacation days were forfeited/lost among the American workforce. Yes, 705 MILLION.
Plan that trip whatever the destination—the park, another city, another country, your local ice cream shop because you’re losing more than you’re gaining by not taking time.
